Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve is a common term used to describe pain associated with a variety of conditions like a spinal subluxation or a compression lesion as in the case of a tunnel syndrome. When a nerve becomes pinched it becomes irritated or inflamed. Scientifically this is referred to as a facilitative lesion. Less commonly, but more vivid in a public’s eye, the nerve may actually become compressed by surrounding muscles, bones or other soft tissues such as a disc or tumor, resulting in pain.

In most cases the nerve becomes irritated or inflamed when the bones, joint or spine are not aligned or moving properly, referred to it as a subluxation. The treatment of which is the specialty of the Chiropractor. You see chiropractors are not Bone Dr’s as some times we are referred to, but rather are specialists in removing irritation to the nerves. As you know the nerves relay the signals to and from every aspect of the body. That is why as a Chiropractor I am able to help with so many varied conditions.

Now there are instances when a nerve does become pinched, such as in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Sciatica. In these cases, injury spasm or inflammation of the surrounding membranes and connective tissues cause the nerve to become compressed, resulting in pain, numbness and tingling. These conditions, though a little more complex, usually respond quite well to Chiropractic Care.

It is important to know that any form of pain should be taken seriously. This is your body’s way of letting you know that something needs to be checked. Similar to a check engine light in your car, your body is telling with you that something isn’t right. It is important to get any form pain properly diagnosed. If nerves are compressed or severely irritated over long periods of time, permanent damage may occur.
